Unbelievable. The Timewriter is one of the most consistent producers out there. I picked this up too and love everything on it. "Handsome Machine" is quite the track!

I think the album is pretty decent. Gorgeous sounds and beautifully produced as always.

But The Timewriter always sounds the same. His records from 10 years ago sound exactly the same as the new stuff. I'm always hoping to hear something mind-blowingly new from him.

indeed. sometimes i think its easy to get caught up in the need for constant newness in sounds, etc.
i know i sometimes do... but quality music is quality music; it doesn't need to sound radically different to appeal or be really good.
and the timewriter for one, has always had a very varied sound as a whole. generally he has a 'sound' of sorts but its so diff from a lot of stuff and then again once in a while he'll do something that does not sound overtly timewriter-esque either.

anyway there's something to be said for knowing what you got is the shit, and not experimenting just for the sake of changing it up. i don't have much patience for that... when its as the cost of the quality of the music.

I've listened to this album properly 3 times now all the way through. I'm actually a little disappointed that I shelled out and bought the whole thing.

The tracks have great beats but I find they all start to lose my interest after about 3 mins. There are a some pretty good ones that I'd play in a set, my favourite being Zero but even that loses it half way through as well. I guess his style of long melodic isn't my most favourite thing these days. I think I want more movement in my music.

I find with Timewriter tracks that there's never any prominent riff that sits on top and carries the melody. Instead everything's always made up of layer after layer of background sounds with a subtle melody coming from the bassline and a few changing chords. Nothing really wrong with this except that it's every single track of his. I find myself wanting for a change mid way through. Throw in a bridge with a different bassline, add a vocal, change up the percussion ... something to revitalize things for the second half. Every track ends up sounding the same, I've never been a fan of this. And yes I realize that it's the hardest thing to do as a musician to change things up like I'm suggesting.

My favourite track of the past few years of The Timewriter is Lion Steps from his last album. I'll never stop playing it. But I think it works great because off the hip-hop vocal that drops into the second half to carry things the rest of the way home.

Regardless, if you like The Timewriter you should check out the new Joris Voorn album on Beatport. It's solid, although perhaps a little on the prog-trance end of things for some.

It's interesting you suggest this because he actually is a trained classical musician and went to the prestigious Paris Conservatory of Music (or whatever it's called).

I haven't really heard any of his new stuff but I absolutely love his older stuff.
