Beginner producer with questions

I'm a house head into the classic/deep/jazzy/afro beat house vibe; who's always wanted to get into remixing/production. So I have a few questions for the producer vets on this forum.

Gear:

uMBP 2.53ghz upgraded with a WD 640gb Scorpio Blue hdd + a WD 640gb external hdd + Logic Pro 8.

Questions:

Should I partition the hdd and install/run LP-8 and its 40gb on its own partition?

I also purchase songs from various sites + still recording my record collection, should I have that stuff on another partition or no?

Basically I have no clue where to start and just want to maximize these toys/and do a proper efficient set up from the get go.

Lastly any resources online or other (tutor) to assist me in getting going to understand Logic quickly so I can turn my thoughts into actual songs etc?

Thanx

I think for a beginner producer, you'll be fine just running everything off of one partion. Hard drives are fast now. Use the external drive as a mirrored backup.

Eventually you might want to add a second hard drive (not partition) for the drive that Logic uses to store all the audio tracks. Logic, plugins etc.. can sit on the first hard drive with your operating system.

Just start, don't worry too much about having the 'right setup.'

The only thing I would suggest right now is to install your plugins on a seperate hard drive from the one your operating system is on to avoid sound glitches and slow cpu processing. Besides that yeah just start.

I always had my OS, sequencer, and plugins on one HD and recorded to a separate HD (not just partition). No need to have plugins on a separate drive because they are loaded into RAM, while audiofiles are read straight off the drive. So it's best ot have the audio files on a separate drive which is at least 7200RPM.

I know what you mean but I found that if your doing a lot of midi triggering that if you put your plug ins on a separate drive then the system disk you get a tighter midi connection with less latency at least it seems that way with my cpu. I gather that its easier on processing the information when only programs are operating on the system disk. But I guess it depends on the computer because I've got mine overclocked too and its a quadcore.
