cord blood banking

Anybody do this?

If so, what banks did you go with?

I know somebody with Create - are they any good?

(Given the family histories of both me and my husband, we are seriously considering this but there's so many options...)

We didn't do it as the cost was to much and the free ones (Alberta) don't guarantee you will get your kids cord as it is public use.

I don't know anyone who has used it. But some of the stories I have heard are rather amaizing but the cord was only good as the problems arose right after birth and not later on.

We did the cord blood banking through Cells for Life - their main office was in the hospital that I delivered at - Marham Stouffville. It was an easy process on our part and they pick it up right from your room (they will do this for all hospitals as well). The only hold up may be if the doctor at the time of birth does not collect enough of a sample... in that case nothing would be stored. But they normally collect more then enough.
And yes, we were told as were all of my friends that is does help with certain illness later on in life not just after birth.
I just could not think of any reason's to not do it. I would forever regret it if somewhere down the road we needed it and we had opted out.

The one thing my wife and I did learn is that later on in life the cord becomes less valuable (needed) as they can now harvest the cells needed via other body parts (stomach, intestine as an example) as science has progressed so much over the past 5-6 years in this area.

This is such a difficult question to answer as this is a very personal choice between you and your partner.

Its even more difficult as research and articles don't tell you the complete picture from either end.

Best of luck.

What's Cord Blood Banking? How did you hear about it? Do you only donate it through your umbilical cord? Can someone explain this to me?

It sounds really interesting.

Basically - you are saving blood from your newborn baby's umbillical cord - the blood contains stem cells which could be used to treat certain diseases that the baby may come down with (or in some cases it could be used for siblings too)

I think it cost us around $1000 initially - for the collection and storage... and about $150/year? I can't remember exactly I would have to look it up.

We ended up going with Create Cord Bank

Cord Blood Bank: (CReATe) Toronto Blood Cord Preservation and Stem Cells

They have a referral program - so if anybody wants to go with them, I can give you my name as a referral - if you do this, you save $115 (1 yr's storage fee) and I would also save 1 yr's storage fee.

Unfortunately, there's only a few places in Canada that do that. But, you have to apply early and go through a big screening process first. Also, I read stats that only a small percentage of the donated blood actually gets banked.

Too late for us to do it...

I think there is more public banking in the USA.

We decided to go with the Create cord bank that is located here in Toronto - for a few reasons related to their facilities and their services.

If anybody else is thinking about banking the cord blood and decides to go with Create you can use my name as a referral - you will save $115 (the cost of 1 yr's storage). Just pm me for details.

Hard choice to make because it really plays to your emotions - but in the end, I wasn't sold on it. We were able to tell whoever we were supposed to tell that the cord could be used for research etc.

US scientists warn of fraud of stem cell 'banks'

yeah - it is a hard decision. What we like about this bank is that they analyze the blood collected before they store it. If for some reason, the collected blood is not viable or there is not enough of it to be usable in the future, you do not have to go ahead and pay for the storage...
