I'll give you a topic...

I find the unrealistic standards set forth by the Hugh Grants, Matthew McConagheys, and Mark Buffalos of the world to be tres difficile to live up to.

How are you gonna compete with a time-travelling dingbat who fucks his future wife when she's underage?

Which is to say, with an immortal dingbat who becomes so bored with life that thousands of his future progeny team up to find new and interesting ways to stimulate a man who has seen and done everything. I think it starts with twin female clones and moves right up to travelling back in time so he can sleep with his own mother. Intergalactic high fives all around.

As much as I'd love to deride this thread query as being stupid and smelly, I have to wonder at it's veracity. When I was forced by friends to watch that abysmal Sex in the City gonorrheaic movie adaptation, people in the theatre literally had tears streaming down their faces. Moreover, summed the experience as "you'll laugh, you'll cry, it's amazing". Was I the only girl in the world who likened watching it to being waterboarded at Guantanamo Bay?

PS I'd say dumb magazines like Cosmo and stupid chick lit books are worse for that shit.

I'd say if a woman is comparing potential partners to the characters actors portray and is using those characters as a benchmark for determining if a potential partner is boyfriendable or not, the problem is NOT with romantic comedies.

It is a bit terrifying that some women think that this and other movies of their ilk are documentaries, and that any right-thinking man is going to run through a goddamn rainstorm to embrace you in slow motion. You know what? It's cold out and this jacket isn't waterproof. Also, chances are that the people with this idea look as far off from Rachel McAdams as I do from John Cusack.

I have not watched it and will never watch it as I feel this is most likely a fair comparison. I have also never seen the notebook as I fear I may go blind for it causing me to stab my own eyes out.

I am not a fan of the genre at all. There must be stupid humour or shit blowing up in my movies. For example my choice of movie on my birthday was Iron Man. Which was awesome by the way.

Romantic comedies are neither romantic, nor a comedy.

i watched 10 minutes of the notebook before deciding i'd rather be female circumsized before continuing to watch.

flashy's right, it totally compromises real romance. you know what real romance is? when i see a jar of gourmet blue cheese in oil at the store and i impulse buy it (i hate blue cheese) and send it to my gf in another city via a mutual lover when he visits her. THAT'S romantic in my books.

I think that, as is the case with any other genre, there are a few "chic lit" books and movies that are pretty witty and insightful, but they are rare gems floating in a sea of crap. The Sex and the City Movie made me embarrassed to be a female, but I freely admit to enjoying the first Bridget Jones' book and movie. I also think When Harry Met Sally was pretty great for it's time, and I will always love Annie Hall. So far, this has not affected my ability to date real men.

Often I think that the portrayal of men in female-directed novels/films/television give women a false impression of how real men behave in relationships. I'm not going to lie about what movies and books I've read - I've seen Sex & the City (loved it), the Time Traveler's Wife is one of my top 5 books of all time (although the movie left something to be desired) and I've read one of the Shopaholic books (too Bridget Jones-y without the Bridget Jones for me) and all the Jane Austen I've been able to get my hands on. I will absolutely admit that when my boyfriend doesn't react to a situation the way Hugh Grant did in Four Weddings, I'm a bit thrown. But recovery is quick and I remember he's a real person who is totally separate from me and we don't always know exactly what the other person wants/needs, etc.

YES! This is the kind of romance I subscribe to, along with your newsletter.

The opposite end of the spectrum from Sex and the City is anything by Nick Hornby that claims to be some kind of metric of what men really think. Maybe he gets a couple of things right, but High Fidelity still ended with John Cusack in the rain.

my mother just gave me a nick hornby book. is she trying to tell me something? like "date a man", perhaps? or, maybe, "go ahead with dating women, men are pathetic"?

This is a chicken-egg question.

Are women who watch romantic comedies more likely to have a distorted vision of romance and therefore ascribe to the romance in those movies, or do romantic comedies distort a woman's romantic expectations?

Kaniz has noted that there is a correlation between women who watch romantic comedies, and a certain set of expectations from men in relationships. Hard to tease out what the cause might be.

I appreciate all kinds of romance...down on one knee, bouquet of roses, door opening, jar-o-cheese sent from afar.

Ok, maybe I don't appreciate all kinds of romance. If a guy wrote a cheesy poem about me, I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face.

personally, i am not a fan of romance, it makes me feel funny. sooo, i definitely does not effect my ability to date real men. what's important & better than silly romance.

i would rather have a dependable guy who stops at the beer store on his way home, and cooks a good dinner for me.

Dear women: you'll never find what you want in a man. Find someone who lives the same fantasy as you. Eat pussy.

geezus. this should be merged with the "does watching porn make men unable to enjoy 'real' women" thread. Mark Ruffalo is fuckin harmless. Get over yourselves.
