skyparty, I'm glad someone agrees with me on H&M. Some of their stuff is OK, other stuff is obviously cheap. Even worse, it almost never fits me properly.

I found Forever 21 in the US to be great for cheap summer dresses, but I've heard that its not quite up to par in Canada. So I guess I'm not much help...

oh yes please! help!

my brother's wedding is next month and i want to look good. thankfully i've been spared bridesmaid duty by his lovely fiancee but that means i need a dress.

i have a couple of things in my wardrobe that i could wear:

- black cocktail dress with vintage diamonte necklace and bracelet - i figure this could look either audrey hepburn-ish or just plain tacky
- cute green just above the knee dress that wrinkles if you even look at it the wrong way (and might not survive the trip in a suit bag)
- colourful-print above the knee vintage dress that fits amazingly but i'm worried will be too casual

i'm a broke student and i'll be arriving in toronto a few days before the wedding so if i want to buy something i'll have approximately 48 hours to shop for it. they're getting married in a church and the reception is on a boat that will cruise the harbour. any suggestions?

The one at King & Spadina had a good selection last week and several I looked at were around the $25-30 mark.

I have no clue about what they have currently but last year I got a really cute polkadot strapless dress @ Costa Blanca for around $40.

I would be more partial to the cocktail dress, but it depends on the style: simple plain lines, straps/strapless, sleeveless, ruffled, etc?

The vintage dress could also be nice. Post pictures if you can Nat!

Which brother is getting married?

I wondered at the "beautifully decent" bit ... but I think I understand now!

I hadn't been in smart set in ages but was surprised when I found an awesome print sun dress there for $50 the other day. There are several styles/colours. Also try urban behaviour/planet/outiftters and the bay always has sales. And I totally second winners --> probably the best spot.

The thing wth cheap is that you often have to sacrifice on quality, so happy hunting for the elusive inexpensive but quality dress!

Winners! I picked up 3 sun dresses the other day, each under $40.
(And an awesome pair of Nine West flats for $50)

oh my god this thread is a godsend. so many suggestions!

like the $50 and under deals!

in my head i have a nice empire waist flow-y type shorter dress.
something to accentuate my boobs, without being slutty!
and something looose to pretend i don't look belly up.

i don't know why i have that dress in mind, but that's dress #1.

other than that i can't wait for summer!
all i wear is skirts, or dresses

and since nothing in my closet fits STILL! *shakes fist*
it's time for a new wardrobe! keep the money coming in!

It's not supposed to be decent!

The dresses are supposed to be tacky!

so go to value village and look for a hideous prom dress!
pink/frilly/floral printed

p.s for ppl who don't know i was invited to the same bachelorette party but can't go.

(edit: Ok i just re-read the invite..it doesn't say tacky..but i would go for frilly grade 8 prom dress style!)

i need a dress for a wedding too! i totally have something very specific in mind - something in a light/med grey and very minimal in a nice woven fabric with the slightest sheen to it. i have a vision (and the shoes and makeup already planned), i just need to find this dress and i don't know where to look!

You can always go vintage.

If you're really good, you'll find something at the Salvation Army, Value Village, etc.

For a 200% mark up (which still isn't so bad considering the cost of nice 1st hand shit) troll around Queen West and Kensington. You can pick up some really good quality used shit, which is always better than shitty quality new shit.

For skyparty: I didn't go in, but Costa Blanca looked like that had some cute dresses at their Eaton Centre location. Last summer Urban Behavior had some nice ones.

For Pyrovitae: if you have a bigger budget, my go-to spot for party dresses is Fashion Crimes on Queen just east of Spadina. I always hunt through all the other stores before remembering I shoulda just gone there in the first place!

This is my favourite store in Toronto. It can be a little pricey but I love the styles. Years ago, I bought a floor length, pin strip, tailored coat with a slit up the front and back. It's still going strong and is so classic I can wear it anytime.

Their dresses are very sexy!

I loooove their dresses. The one I bought this winter is a full-length strapless with a peaked neckline...black jersey with ruching along the sides so the fabric doesn't hug your bumpy bits I love it. You can always count on them for something unique with great tailoring.

not good on the budget, but really gorgeous unique dresses check out Lemor on Queen West, its east of spadina, around Peter street on the North side.

I got a beautiful green paisly print silk, hankerchief bottm dress, with pretty beading details for my sisters wedding there. It wasn't cheap but its quality and fits very well etc.

i found a cool dress at aritzia. grey, crepe de chine, V-neck, above the knee and with this ruffle thing down the front centre (sounds revolting but it's not). of course it didn't fit me, or some other girl who was trying it on for that matter, cos it was all fitted at the hips and loose everywhere else. and of course, now that i've got it in my head that i need a grey dress for this wedding, i don't want any other colour!

sigh. i really thought dresses were supposed to be the easiest thing for a girl to wear. not this girl! i swear it is harder for me to find a dress that fits than a pair of pants. actually probably harder than finding a fucking bathing suit. grrrrrrr.
