Mr. Scruff at Wrongbar

oh man i'm still not 100% recovered from this night but i had an amazing time. i knew to buy a ticket in advance, which was good cause it was completely sold out when i showed up. they made us wait in line for a while as they processed everyone. i was fine with that, as long as my ass is getting in the bar to see Scruff then i'm all good.

place was jam packed, but you were still able to maneuver around. best bang for the buck in the space department was on the stage, until that got overrun too. crowd was ok - scruff is kind of a household name now but i don't think it's a bad thing that his sets are so accessible. i like these kinds of nights cause people are more social than on nights that are all about boom boom beats. i dont think i've ever talked to someone i didn't know at a place like footwork.

scruff brought with him a VJ and a soundman. the place was sounding great. lots funk records, latin, and a bit of bass music. he was givin 'er for hours on end. i wouldnt be surprised if this clocked in at around 5-6 hours total playing time.

at some point near the end my jacket disappeared all of a sudden. it was sort of under my nose, so i didn't think it was stolen. i called the bar today and it was there so i went to grab it. should give you an idea of what kind of night i was having. a fucking great one!

nasty nav told me he thought it was one of the best, if not THE best night of music in his bar since he opened. that's pretty bold and he wouldn't commit to that statement, but you get the idea.

if anyone took some photos or video can you please upload to flickr or youtube? i want to post something about this night on my blog. i showed up and my camera was out of batteries. thanks.

Sounds like a good show. I'd like to see Scruff play live sometime.

On my books right now is Farrina in Mtl. this week. It sounds like a 10$ ticket so I don't think I can pass it up!

MR. SCRUFF at Wrongbar Rating: NNNN

The first sign that Mr. Scruff’s set was going to be special was when Wrongbar owner Nav Sangha told us a few of hours before the gig that the UK DJ/producer had spent all afternoon tweaking the club’s sound system and was planning to play from opening to closing (about 10 pm to 3 am). These days, it’s common for visiting DJs to show up around midnight and play for a couple hours at most, so Scruff’s admirable work ethic got our attention.

Once we were past the huge lineup and in the club, it was immediately apparent that his sound-system pickiness was paying off. Bouncing freely between dusty jazz-funk records and futuristic electronic tracks, he managed to avoid making the former sound tinny and weak in comparison to the latter. And the length of his set allowed for full expression of his eclectic taste, making the jumps between genres and decades seem natural.

It was a welcome reminder that a great DJ night is less about tricks and fist-pumping anthems, and more about playing good songs through a clear, powerful sound system for a crowd that wants to dance.

damn. should've gone INTO the club instead of standing outside contemplating how crammed it would be inside due to the sellout.

heard scruff was just wonderful. when he's on, IT IS muthafuckin' ON!!!

Hey mrtunes... here's some extreme trivia for you. Just before I bumped into you (if you remember that at all) Scruff jumped from jazz breaks to a melodic house track which Rich Hope played at the first Bounce by the Lake event... it's like a piano synth, simple 2-4 note loop... trying to track ID this bitch.

yes i remember chatting with you

i know which track you are talking about and was curious to ID it too. but now i've lost what it sounds like in my head which sucks. the only hope is if scruff recorded it

we can also check his 6 hour set from new years:

Yeah I didn't mean to suggest you were visibly wasted... I was just in and out so quickly and our chat was super brief. But hey, I have seen you get crunk before

Thanks for the link! Listening now. I'll let you know if I ever figure out who's behind that track.

first of all, FFMMMLLL x1,000 for not picking up a ticket online on tuesday when i should have, instead of waiting until friday afternoon. sold. out.

i've been waiting for six years to hear scruff play. pure, epic disappointment.

and,

if this is the same tune i'm thinking of (and it sounds like it is) it's been stuck in my head for over a decade. daft punk dropped a tune that sounds just like the one you're describing at the syrous six year party on labour day weekend in 1999. i've only heard it two or three times since, and i've never been able to figure it out. to this day i've just called it "the piano track". lol

but yeah, if it's melodic french house, with a looped piano in the background, playing the same four notes with an insanely catchy beat - it's gotta be the same tune. i wonder if oerets can id it? i'd love to know the name too.

(it wasn't the link mr. tunes posted)

your description made me think of these - they're both french housers with piano loops anyways

None of these are the track I'm thinking of... it's not really a piano in the classical sense, more synthy and drawn out I think... fuck, I dunno. It was stuck in my head for days (on a few occasions) but now I can't even remember it well.

Rich, is there a recording of your first Bounce by the Lake set? I think I could find it in there.
