Ultragamma / ill.gates / ~bassnectar~ @ wrongbar

where to even begin.....

what an unbelievably incredible night that was, truly fucking EPIC in every sense of the word.

Got in shortly after 11, the line was dreadfully slow, and even worse as it got later i heard, but once we were in, the club had a nice amount of people, Ultragamma was laying down some fine fine tracks and was a perfect start to the night.

we had a massive crew with us, it was amazing how many people came out and represented the BASS scene in toronto.

Dylan aka ILL.GATES through down a fucking unbelievable set not eve 5 hours after getting in after a 4 week stint touring around the world !!!! the new tunes he played, the amazing force Bassnectar's system put out, and the phenomenal sound in that place was just fucking raw, the last track you through down that you did with Ben Samples is fucking INSANE DOOOD, so glad your back, cant wait to hear more.

wow man, since 2006, i have not scene BASSNECTAR live, and holy fucking CHRIST ON A TOOTHPICK,

BOWS TO THE BASS GODS

Bassnectar's set was a non stop, grinding, beating, pulpifying breakdown of some of the best tunes played with an unmatched intensity. i sweat more at that party than i did when skream & benga were there, and danced way longer and harder. absolutely destroyed by his set, seriously cannot wait for next year to go out west and see him live at one of their ' BIG ' parties.

and the after party we had going was fucking AWESOME , didnt get home till 7am, and now im at work.... sigh, at least i didnt need to be here till noon, and i arrived late due to not having car till 12:40pm

much love to the people reprezenting BASS in the city, and thanks to all the people that brought this party together, it was one for the record books.

and to my peeps, my beautiful darling Joanne, Dylan & Nunich, Ryan, Nick, Rob, Jeff, Jamie, Dorianne, Sage & Cory, Tika & Justin, Nikki & Jer, Lee and Reynolds, Christian, Cat, Ishka, Meesha, Mandai, and anyone else i missed, wholy FUCK WHAT A GODDAMN AMAZING SHOW.

i need food and more coffee, and alot more doobie.

peace out ....

that sound system took it like a champ too. mental basslines, sick heavy stuff that i've been craving. that is the official loudest anything my ears ever heard.

i can corroborate that! one hug and i was covered in jai juice. (eeeew. )

that line thing was ridiculous, when we first got there there was one giant line for both tiocket holders and non, which was ludicrous - as we saw when we finally got inside there was no way eveyrone outsie would have gotten in so the ticketholders shoudl have their own priority line. they did set that up eventually and once they did we were inside quickly. the coat check line was ridiculous too, so i didn't check my coat... and ended up losing it.

but hte music was crazy! dark heavy wowowowowowow. awesome. and so sexy! i totally need to do a dubstep burlesque number. i stayed out way later than i had intended.

You forgot me!

I had an amazing time. I did wish the system was a bit louder and the bass heavier though. . . but I never made it onto the floor itself. . . I was only three feet away though. Are we sure that was Bassnectar's sound system? I wondered because some of the high end systems were properly hanging from the ceiling when a traveling rig would have normally gone for the tower. . .

Dylan's last two tracks were NUTS.

I'm listening to Bassnectar's new CD right now!

hahahahaha i knew i was forgetting someone,

im pretty sure there was def some elements of Bassnectars rig there.
i know during his soundcheck earlier there was an issue with some of the hardware, i think it was having a proper back up amp or something, so he may have been playing to make sure that didnt short the system.

but front and center the sound was absolutely amazing.

you could feel your body vibrate from the bass.

Boom box(ill.gates remix)
Mr Projectile
When i Grow Up(bassnecter remix)

are my 3 fav tracks from his new CD.

sweet zombie jesus, what a show.

decided last minute to pop in.

he was better than I thought he was going to be.

last time I saw him was at OM maybe, wasn't my kinda music.

He played some mental shit though, it was fun.

i think i'm going to wear only my speedos to Wrongbar from now on. Shit just gets too heated in there.

i came. i drank. i danced. i sweat. i left.

OK, wow... what a night. WHAT a night!

i couldn't imagine a better homecoming gig. sometimes it's really hard to be doing so well outside of toronto, and then get so little love/money from my hometown, but then along comes a gig like last night and it completely changes my mind. the screaming at the end of my set was by FAR the loudest applause i've ever received in the city and it really made me feel thankful/lucky.

lorin was (obviously) amazing... so many unreleased and new tunes, such tight and creative mixing, seeeerious bass pressure, and such an amazing stage presence... there really is a reason he is where he is in this industry and he couldn't deserve it more. i am very very proud to say that he is my friend.

ultragamma was fucking RAD too. i wish that there were enough time slots that he could have played longer/later. the guy really has something special going on.

as for the soundsystem, lorin did not bring his PK rig (the wobble factory) on this leg of the tour. that was the funktion one that wrongbar owns. funktion one sound is beyond proper, and the costs of bringing the wobble factory to toronto would basically mean either a) $40-50 door price, or b) lorin doesn't get paid... and that's assuming that they even let it through the border.

when you see lorin in the states he has a much MUCH more large scale operation... tour manager, dedicated sound tech riding the levels and eqs from the floor, another sound tech to set up and manage the wobble factory sound system, and then at least one vj and potentially andrew jones doing live art or something as well... it's quite the show. it's also insanely expensive. toronto simply does not have a bass music market large enough to handle something like that. maybe in time, but definitely not at the moment.

however last night was DEFINITELY a HUGE step in the right direction. every act on the bill was playing unabashedly edgy music and the capacity crowd was LOVING every second of it. once you feel the sound of bass music on a proper system with a crowd like that there really is no going back. i'm sure last night was a revelation for many in attendance.

here's to hoping that the progress of bass music is as inevitable in toronto as it has proven to be elsewhere.

lots of love,

illiam b. gates

amazing. just fucking amazing! best party in a long while. sick tracks from ill.gates from beginning to end, and bassnectar made every hair on my head vibrate! my ears only stopped ringing a couple hours ago. that was some much needed noise!

only complaints have nothing to do with the acts -- just the club making us wait in line outside when we arrived early even though it was completely empty, and then our friend being charged $25 at the door, even though we put him on a reduced guest list. and that was after he had to wait 1/2 hour outside before getting in. so ya, not cool, but whatevs, he was totally good-natured about it.

thanks to everyone for a sweaty, fully fucking satisfying party!

in the words of one wigged Laotian "OWNERSHIP!!!"

Last night was incredible, a night to remember for many people!

From the moment we walked in just after 11pm we were being treated to the experimental wonky super talented ULTRAGAMMA. What great taste in music (big up the bullion and danny breaks)! Cannot wait to catch him again!

ill.Gates really proved himself last night! WOW! Last few sets I've heard from him have been great but last night he really showed a real maturation in his productions and selections. Really strong the entire way through and totally had the crowd going mental!

BASSNECTAR CAN DO NO WRONG!!!

A super hype blend of every tempo out there. From start to finish he blew the roof off of Wrongbar!!! Such thick chunky percussion with the most perfect bass patch to match! The missy remix was hilarious yet fucking great! The place was bonkers and sweat was dripping from the ceiling it was most definitely disgusting but those have always proven to be the best nights. What a treat for Toronto to have the chance to hear him play. It's been since April 07!!! that is far too long to go without a bassnectar fix. Definitely hear some tracks that I heard him play at Shambhala which provided awesome moments of nostalgia. Well done lorin, can't wait to have you back!

I have to say I only stayed for about 20 minutes of egyptrixx set before I got whisked away by friends but what i did hear was very intriguing! really great bouncy techno. I wish i could have stayed longer alas when it's time to go, it's time to go!

the sound at Wrongbar blew me away! I thought it sounded great for Skream/Benga but it was much better this time around. I didn't see any additions to the rig from Bassnectar which was fine. I believe Wrongbar has the best system that I've heard! Ian, the sound was a lot weaker at the
sides in terms of proper sub bass, you should have experienced the floor!

there were definite reduced guest list issues at the door on several accounts! that was unexpected and makes you look like an ass when you said you got 10 friends on the list and they all have to pay door price. ah well, can't put a price on that calibre of a night.

Major shouts to my people who I was lucky enough to share the night with! rob, Jeff, James, Jai & Jo, dylan, nunich, cata, iska, meesha, stephane, kenneth, charles, lee, christian, etc, etc, etc!

One of my favourite parts of the night was when I was talking to a guy who said, "I haven't been out in a very long time." He looked around the bar only to see hoards of sweaty people hands in the air and thrashing out to proper bass music. he then looked at me and followed with, "Who ever said raves never happen anymore?" he then pursued the dancefloor and...well...raved, haha! it was awesome.

Embrace YES, Wrongbar YES, BASSNECTAR...YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

that's it for me, what a trip! see you all next time.

ps: See what i'm saying?

still dehydrated.

It's all been said already. Incredible talent, start to finish, excellent sound, crowd, venue, my only complaint being that the reduced list was effed-up.

Wrongbar, buy some fans, seriously.

Dylan: what Nick said.

you've always been good, but last night I saw you cross-over into great. wicked stuff.

is it me or were there JBL subwoofers installed next to the horns in the top left and right corners of the stage? wow, is this new or just new to me, installing bass in the ceilings? i'm all for it, the more the merrier.

Right! So Wrongbar. Seems the constant issues with this place are the handling of the line ups outside, the fuck ups with the guest and reduced lists, the complete absence of proper air conditioning, sufficient fans and ventilation and the unimaginably unbearable heat that results... Hopefully both the bar and the promoters for parties that are thrown there will 'work together' to resolve these lingering issues since issues like these have a huge and collective impact on how the night will 'go' for those that pay and want to attend. These issues will also affect future attendance levels and who really wants to complain about these same old things?

ANYWAY. Surging forward! Thrusting along! An amazing night in basically any, every, many ways. Fantastic line-up of djs, great energy and enthusiasm from a colourful captivated capacity crowd, loads of both interestingly sweet girls as well as sweetly interesting boys... Once our crew overcame the chaos and irritations of guest and reduced listing entry, things immediately catapulted into a Whirlwind of Awesome.

Sadly we didn't arrive in time to catch all of Ultragamma but what we heard was exactly what we wanted to hear in that signature Ultragamma way. The dancefloor was already hopping and hyped and applauded enthusiastically at the UG end. Then ill.Gates came along and he also 'killed it.' For someone who has taken 13 flights this month alone and who basically just stepped off a plane from Denver with just enough time to 'rock' but without the time to shower or even change his clothes, he didn't do half badly... {GRIN} As I am inescapably overfamiliar with his 'song-ography' I thought I wouldn't be able to fully enjoy a set of all originals. Instead I found myself dancing as hectically and happily as everyone else and lost among the throng of what was basically a nightlong packed dance floor... The words 'Darling' and 'Pants' come tumblingly to mind! {heart}

And then came the main.

Bassnectar 'destroyed' of course but I think I'm at the point of absolute assumption and consummate belief that Bassnectar Destruction is a given. His set was strong in a crushing and colossal way and although twice I felt like I might faint from the crowd and heat, I 'persevered' and was ultimately so lost in a headfuck of feverish ecstasies that not even the intense heat could extinguish the heights of pleasure and enjoyment reached and felt. I didn't know if he could outdo the triumph of his El Mocambo set two years previous but he managed it and with great energy and ease. 'Crushing' it seems is a Bassnectar specialty.

The whole night seemed to fold itself into about fifteen minutes. I was startled and surprised at how suddenly it all came so racingly to such an end. We afterpartied at ours though to make this fantastic night last a few hours longer and more. All in all, such a night to remember. And sensational of course to have my prodigal son of a DJ home again. Thanks to every beautiful person I had the pleasures of sharing this exciting, lively and memorable evening with: I find you each very cute and delicious. Thanks too to Wrongbar and Embrace for the experience in full (the problems listed above notwithstanding).

So looking forward to another highly destructive evening.
Let's see if Joker/Nomad can fill the anticipational void...

! xo

I'm a little pissed.

I was there. Didn't see a lot of people who were there I wanted to see. Enjoyed Dylan's set. I remember Lorin starting and then it gets very fuzzy. Don't remember a single moment of his set. Lol me. At least Cori was lucid and apparently I enjoyed the set.

boo me.

I took friday off! Wasn't roofied as I apparently was the one who decided when to go home and hailed the cab etc.

It's like the memory of the set was erased from me noggin. Sooooo frustrating.

That's the weird thing. I don't think I was out of control or being an idiot. No other things were imbibed cept for a few joints. I blame the Rockstart vodka drink I had before the party.
