Shambhala '09
My brain still hurts, so I'll keep this as short and sweet as I can.
As always, the festival was pure awesomeness, and also as per usual, I missed 80% of the acts that I meant to catch, although I couldn't really care less because Benga, Excision, Eprom, Bassnectar, Subvert, N-Type, Ill Gates, the star-studded Fractal Funk Jam, and a bunch of other acts whose names aren't coming to mind at the moment, absolutely blew me socks clean off. In my opinion the Village was hands-down THE stage (the Living Room being a somewhat-close second), and those in attendance were routinely treated to absolutely DISGUSTING, earth-quaking, chest-compressing, mind-fucking nastiness, the likes of which I've never heard, and believe me, I've heard my share of filthy sickness. [Niko, post your videos!] Every DJ raised the bar just that much more, and on Sunday night the thought "music just CAN'T get more evil than this" went through my mind at least 20 times as the music got filthier and filthier. Also worth mentioning, the Living Room (beach) was great yet again, showcasing everything from glitch and dubstep, to the downtempo, ambient, worldly lovliness that it brings every year. The Pride's Saturday morning sunrise set was the latter, and was all kinds of awesome. The delightfully eclectic track selection was absolutely perfect for the time and setting, and every track was filled with a wonderful, barely constrained funk that kept my sleepy head moving, while the ambient backdrops and worldly rhythms melted me further and further into the sand. Everyone was friendly and interactive, a tonne of people were still up and moving, all smiles, and I couldn't have asked for a more perfect ending to the night. My thanks to Dylan, Nunich, Nick and Meghan, who all made wonderful, always entertaining travel companions. Hope to see you all again next year! |

Another awesome time! I really wanted to catch Ill Gates' set but by Sunday around 2:30am I was finally done after 7 hours straight of dancing and just didn't have another couple hours left in me. I also managed to sleep through Excision, which was the only other set I was really hyped for that I missed.
Caught some fantastic sets by Craze, Stickypod Connection, Spor, Ewun, Bassnectar, and more. I'll post a couple of video clips when I get home and have a chance to upload them, including a dubstep remix of Energy 52 (Cafe Del Mar!!) that I believe was dropped by Eprom in the Village. |

still decompressing...
full review to come. eprom OWNED it for me music wise, followed closely by excision. slept through bassnectar and n-type and ALMOST my own set due to a dead cellphone battery but managed to pull it out of the fire at the last minute. other notables were: nunich's set with innessa on the chill stage benga's morning set (which involved him actually wrestling craze off the mic. too good!) lighta! crew getting abducted by gnomes on my birthday (i shit you not) only realized it was not a hallucination when i saw photos... classic! the drive there and back was awesome (i'm looking at you docta seuss!) playing all originals on that 100 000 watt system was pretty damn fun too. videos to come. <3! d |

a review is pretty much impossible...there just aren't words to describe the ridiculously amazing gong show that is shambhala. the brain cell holocaust my body is attempting to recover from isn't helping either.
memorable (heh) sets: -Czech: first set of the party, awesome way to set the stage. one of the best sets i've heard him drop. -Craze: dirty housey bootyish shit at the start but worked his way into some sick dnb... so good -Ewun + Spor: my jungle heros for saturday night. Spor in particular slayed shit. sooo dirty, the village was going OFF. -Sweet Anomaly: was dropping some amazing dubby/ragga tunes for our sunday afternoon chill session at the beach. so good! perfect warmup for the best night of music. -Benga: one of the sets i was most excited to see and it was RAD. when he dropped In For The Kill it was CHILLING (despite having already heard 342847 other DJs drop it over the course of the weekend). -Bassnectar: so. fucking. heavy. as expected one of the best sets of the weekend. pretty sure all 14, 000 people showed up for it too. and again, my fave set of the weekend... Stickypod Connection!! <3 <3 <3. these guys had a LOT of hype to live up to after last year's ridiculousness. no prob, they brought it and then some. dirty, heavy-ass shit tho this year tho, no fucking around! heaaavy on the dnb/ragga tip too right from the start which is pretty much the quickest way into my heart. love you guys. Sets I missed but wish I hadn't: Mat the Alien, Excision, N-Type, Deekline, Jack Beats, Ill Gates.. fuck there's only so much partying a body can handle ![]() My absolute favourite thing about Shambhala are the DJ's reactions after dropping their first set there, and how blown their minds are about what just went down. It's so amazing. Big ups to the Toronto crew for making the trek out once again... so good to party with you guys. Can't wait for next year. |

benga kept mixing in record after record and quite similar to his set at Wrongbar a few months ago, I think a lot of his records are well overplayed and he is in need of some fresh pressed wax. when it wasn't a record error, it was straight up craze being a way-to-high-mc bouncing around and getting in the way of tone arms and benga's mixing. after a few screw-ups benga got on the mic and aksed the crowd if they all loved drugs? asked us if we all took ecstasy and then confessed his current state of being really really high. the show continued with less complications as craze took a step back. full review later...stay tuned. |

first off, i'd like to apologize to dj nick.c and docta seuss for missing out on our meet up session, i was sleeping off my friday night. i should know better than to plan anything for the afternoon.....next year i suppose!
once again shambhala proved why it is the best party in canada, it was really well organized and was OFF THE HOOK! i thought that i would be totally dead by sunday but the djs just kept bringing it and bringing it and kept me out WAAAAAAY too late. i just can't believe that it is possible to hear that much great music in one weekend. big ups to the T.O. Tribe massive for making the trek out to BC, it was great to see Mboy and K8 again, and was a pleasure to meet The Watcher; hopefully you guys either move out west or come again next year, you're awesome party people. it was also great to see 420 norm and the calgary bunnies again......you guys ROCK!! kix, subsonic and i rolled in mid afternoon friday and were relgated to the furthest reaches of the field for camping, so far in fact that we determined that we were in a suburb of Shambhala (Salmo Heights reprazent!!). it was at least quiet out there and we had good neighbours. we started with Czech, who I hadn't seen since he headlined Shams in 2001, and he played a decent set with a pretty awesome (although small) crowd. Craze was kind of all over the place and didn't really get too much flow going but the Forest was into what he was putting down and it was a good show. we caught the last hour Ed Solo who was really good and the first bit of Degree who represented alberta well. I ran over to hear a bit of Mat the Alien but wasn't feeling it, so went down to the Living Room to catch Benga. He played alot of his well known tracks and it was a good time, especially Craze being loser wasted up there with him. saturday night i was REALLY trying to make excision's set as it was my primary reason for coming to Shams (his set last year hooked me into dubstep) but i disco napped until midnight and so i only caught the last half hour. Ewun and Spor fucking owned (except for Ewun's HORRIBLE MCing during Spor's set), i was totally in DnB heaven. i caught bits of Nick Thayer in the Forest but wasn't really feeling it too much and the Village was going off. Eprom was excellent as well but I was starting to tire so I took a bit of a rest and made it back down to the Forest in the morning for Neighbor who was bringing the funk, he played perfect 8am house. sunday night was EPIC!! it was one of the best nights of music that I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. Stickypod absolutely ROCKED THE FUCK out of the Forest! I was expecting something like last year but it was so much heavier and up tempo. I thought their remixes and cuts were a little tighter and smoother than last year's set, and it was simply in heaven for the three hours. It was one of the highlights of the weekend for sure. I was so tired and sore walking down there, and before i knew it, their three hour set was done and ready to hear some scary dubstep. Right after Stickypod was Noah ?? or something and he played some wicked tunes but I only stayed until Benga started in the Village. Benga, Bassnectar, and N-Type absolutely killed it. I was in heaven, the Village was RAMMED beyond belief, and the bass was so heavy. We thought we heard Bassnectar say that he was playing either a new track of his or Ill Gate's, either way, it was fucking dope! My back pretty well seized up after 9 and half hours of straight dancing so I missed Ill's set ( ). My only regret is missing that one Max Ulis' and Excision's.So glad to have made it out for this party and I can't wait to come back next year. edit- my La Roux count was up to 9 by the end of Sunday. SALMO HEIGHTS REPRAZENT. nice review dude, you said a lot of what my shmangled brain couldn't spit out. indeed, best party in Canada. it takes excess to the next level in just about every way.
and to quote docta seuss, "DISGUSTING, earth-quaking, chest-compressing, mind-fucking nastiness" is putting it mildly. there were times where i had to take a breather cuz the bass was just so, so intense. it was so visceral. 100,000 watts pumping through your guts, yet still able to have a conversation with the person next to you, and no bleeding ears after. amazing. everyone needs to experience this shit. |

Cafe Del Mar - Energy 52 dubstep remix, I'm pretty sure this was Eprom in the Village on Saturday night: |

was my 5th shambhala, and the best one to date,
I really like the additions they made, the living room is doper then ever, as is the forest (PK bassbin stacks in full force), I may even have to say that the forest was heavier than the village this year? the whole thing was completely bonkers, missed a lot of sets, saw a lot of sets, lost my mind a couple times, met some new people, saw some old people loosing their minds, went to nelson to try to reintegrate with society after the show, decided to flee to a national park immediately! sets for me where definetly mat the alien on thursday night - he just keeps getting better, the drum n bass scratching was out of control, as was his beat juggling of that eprom tune, dopamine! the benga beach set was a completly surreal experience, craze was being a looser - but whatev, the party is pretty intense im sure he just got ahead of himself and got completely wasted, who came on after benga? (long hair - looked local? was laying down incredible music) eoto's set in the labyrinth was really cool, as was the absolute smack down of AC slayter and then deekline to close off the forest on sunday night oh and boy 8 bit after small town, and boogie army, both a complete surprise and both so good bassnectar was a tad dissapointing, don't get me wrong was still sick for the average dj, but after hearing so much dubstep all weekend i'm surprised how much he played (although whatever that day n night remix was / is completly mental) - was definetly the darker side of lorin quotes of the weekend "dubstep is NOT the answer" - talent area port o potie "she smelt like K" - anyonymous "these d**gs are mixed with other d**gs, know what i'm saying? howdy neighbour" - some guy I think its my last shambhala, but damm that party is incredible, year after year consistently the best party ever, hands down, if you ever have a chance to go, I highly suggest you do. |

Next year get them to put you on at a time that's *not* on the last party night at one of the last time slots available!
![]() Or maybe next year I'll just use more non-drowsy "aides" on the Sunday night to make it through. |

this has been one of the toughest weeks for me. After experiencing something so surreal and epic as Shambhala for the frist time, I think most people would agree that normal life just doesn't cut it anymore!
Arriving after dark on friday night my party people and I quickly set up our tents and got ourselves all situated and prepped for what would be the 1st out of 3 nights of mayhem. Comfy clothes to dance for hours in, check! proper footwear, hydration devices, camera, money, misc. party props/sunglasses; CHECK! entering the main area with food vendors, hoards of people and all the anticipation in the world I felt as though i'd stepped into an adult playground complete with bizarre comstumes, beats of all varieties and virtually no rules. It's as if 10,000+ people put there heads and energy together to create the most kick ass party of the year. Nothing was half ass, every detail was carried out 110%. Walking through the fractal forest had to be one of the most overwhelming experiences on my first night. people everywhere dancing, chatting, offering free hugs(among other things), giant pyramids in the trees displaying various graphics to trip out to and what impressed me the most was the big and full sound coming from each direction. At one moment I felt like I was in a big club until I looked up only to see the canopy of cedars and stars. INCREDIBLE! As the night went on I kept asking myself, Is this really happening? Is this real? how could something so awesome be happening in the middle of the remote woodlands of BC? I'll spare you the details of the rest of my trip as I could go on for hours spewing about how amazing it was. Those who have been know whats it's like and those who haven't still won't appreciate what it's truely like to experience the remarkable event of Shambhala until you do it first hand. Major highlights include: - benga's sunrise set on the beach - max ulis' set after benga, wow he dropped some amazing tunes! - dancing with a giant bear(sporting a Rottun Records cape) and Dragon(who gave us great directions back to Calgary) - Excision's set, he absolutely tore the village apart, I can't wait to get a copy of this years set. - I'd love to say Eprom's set but I can't honestly say I remember a thing about it. I have pictures, but absolutely no memory. FACK! - ALL OF SUNDAY NIGHT! subvert, benga, bassnectar, n-type, ill.gates - hearing dylan drop a tune we wrote together nearing the end of his sunrise set in the village! you've never heard your own production properly until you hear it on 100,000 watts of punishing sound! - chilling out on the beach at anytime taking in the sun rays and passing the pipe 'round. the village was totally the place to be with the living room coming in second(totally agreeing with docta seuss)! I couldn't and still cannot get over how monstrous that wall of subs is in the village, HOLY SHIT! if only every party i went to during the year had proper sound, sigh... Oh to be back there right.......NOW! I'd give my left nut!!!(seriously, do you really need both?) For those of you out there contemplating going, do yourself a favour and GO! I can only hope i'll be able to return next year. Big ups to all who made this trip so amazing: Rob, Meghan, Dylan, Nunich! ***Dear tribers, I have videos but how do I put them directly into my post? |
