Röyksopp @ Opera House - Sept 20, 2005
Awesome. I was expecting a little more thumpy continuity but nope. But it was still quite nice. Lots of pretty people, nerdy people, nicely dressed people. hot women, warm beer.
I had two arms crossed grumpy pants in front of me who would push on me as a went by to get a beer. Why are you standing down here with your arms crossed being all pissy pants in a rammed full club? Weirdos. They looked pissed that they had to come out on a Tuesday. They didn't play '49 percent' but they played just about everything else - lots of old stuff too... Anyway. It was all over by 11:30. How civilized. 7/10. --r |

great time tonight with a great crew of friends.
Annie didn't blow me away like the pitchfork hype machine told me she would, but she was super cute and had a great voice. the vocal trade-off with her bandmate on bubblegum was cool. did Annie remind anyone else of Aqua? ha. Royksopp, well if you like your emo electronica than you'd have enjoyed this show. they were great, played all the favorites like eple, remind me, etc - and that crazy trancer at the end, my god. good fuckin times, will post some pics in the morning |

Good stuff!
Royksopp gets an 8/10 for being really solid. Not a mind-blowing 9, nor a near-death experience 10, but a solid 8. They have created a very refined live act, full of energy and beauty. Not one slip-up, not a single dull moment really. The light show was appropriate, the female vocalist they brought on tour was beautiful, I couldn't really imagine much improvement to be made. Two encores (second encore was unplanned according to their setlist). The only part that could've used a tiny bit of improvement was the vocal level of the deeper vocoded mic, I found it was a bit overpowering during one of the duets (Circuit Breaker I think). I really enjoyed hearing Follow My Ruin and What Else Is There, two very incredible songs that worked well with the crowd. Remind Me had th e crowd really really dancing frantically, and Poor Leno just destroyed the house. Annie however gets a 9/10. Her music is not only more interesting than Royksopp's, but her voice is actually surprisingly good live. The only problem with her set was that it was too short; 6 songs totally cheated me, I wanted to hear -every- song she could muster, not just 6 songs. Too bad. From what I remember, she played Always Too Late, Chewing Gum, The Greatest Hit, Wedding, Come Together, and she closed with Heartbeat. All the songs were so much more than you could ever have expected them to be in a live setting, it was really, really nice. Her 'bandmates' included one guy on drums/guitar (which was a great compliment for songs like Always Too Late, Come Together, and Heartbeat, especially Heartbeat), and a guy on various types of synths/gear, though his job felt very superficial as he spent most of his time with a demented look on his face as he pressed buttons like crazy to achieve deafening sweeps and effects. I really wanted to meet Annie, but she never came out into the crowd. I saw Royksopp earlier in the night at the small diner across from the strip club by the Opera House, but didn't introduce myself / try to get them to take me backstage. Too bad, I really wanted to meet Annie.Anyway, Mr Tall was there, and he was both tall and funny. That was a nice surprise

Good show... but the thing I can't stand about that kind of crowd is that no one dances! Just staring and headnodding.

my pictures suck infinitely worse than Stargurl's so they're staying on the camera phone where they belong...
really liked hearing "circuit breaker" last night, overdoing the vocoder worked well i thought. and what's the name of the very last encore song, anyone? |

I fucking hate the opera house and their shittier than shit soundsystem.
I love royksopp, a huge fan, and standing on the floor I had to leave because the soundsystem was ruining things for me. So I went to the back bar where there was a lone speaker I stood next to so I could at least distinguish some of the sounds. Circuit Breaker and Don't Go were standout tracks but the fact I couldnt hear those sick basslines pissed me off. They were just muffled groans. bullshit on you opera house I will never step foot inthere again. I like the subtle homage to kraftwerk. |

super show. i'd give the performance definitely a 9, but the crowd probably a 5. if people from ontario weren't so hipster and lame it could have been a perfect show. stupid cross-arms mcbaseball cap let's review their albums out loud during the shows!
people who only move their feet to let people past and only raise their arms to take pictures, or wave at a friend.. well guess what! everyone in the venue, and the band are your friend for the night, so just wave at everyone to the beat and move your feet. wankers.at least during the last 4 songs they earned their stay by going completely wild... and it was obvious everyone enjoyed that part of the show way more.. the band, the crowd, even stupid cross-arms mcbaseball cap. if the crowd had been like that for the whole show it would have been mind-altering. anyone know the setlist? at least 3 or 4 got given away after the show.. should have been more on the ball and got one! i don't know the new album so well.. at least circuit breaker, follow my ruin, what else is there, and only this moment.. what else? i know they played at least remind me, eple, poor leno, higher place, so easy, sparks from melody.. i thiiink in space, and possibly more that i'm not entirely sure of. and then don't leave which near as i can tell is really thier please stay by mekons remix the first encore was two unlreleased awesome kinda jammy songs... I saw the names on a setlist someone else managed to grab. i didn't recognize them, but i don't remember what they were. the second (and unplanned!) encore was So Easy. very sweet. me and my bro got a point and nod from the dude on the left (stage-right) for bopping our arms to the beat. great show. and a great finish to my u2-saulwilliams-sigurros-royksopp concert marathon. |

I must admit, I have only recently heard of the likes of Royksopp (courtesy of my good friend, stargurl). We walked in midway through Annie's performance. It seemed to be exactly what Eye Magazine described on the front cover: electro-bubble-gum-pop-ish. Enjoyable and quite an energetic sound for the genre.
Royskop blew my sopps (I mean socks) off! I loved the switch from dreamy ambient melodies to hard-rushy beats. The crowd was a good wholesome crowd and were definitely commanded when the boys threw down some wicked energy-fueled work towards the end. I walked away astounded. |

seems like 95% of the crowd never moves a muscle at these type of concerts.. except for the people at the very front, which is where i stuck myself for the night, and danced my ass off.. instead of bitching about people not dancing, accept the fact that the drones stuck on pause are a staple at these shows, and move your ass to the front.. and dance.. and ignore everyone behind you not dancing... problem solved
annie - cute stuff, nice warm up set, but nothin spectacular.. royksopp - 9/10, one of the best shows i've seen this year.. blew me away and left me craving so went home and threw on The Understanding.. dig the kraftwerk intro and wardrobe.. |
