Lo-Fi Glitchy Drug Beats - Matt Coleridge Solution Radio - 12-07-04

MATT COLERIDGE
Solution | Boa-Redux | Release Records | Proton Radio

So for my second last show of the year I wanted to do something really really deep, dark and twisted. Those "drug sounds" that people comment on all the time to me. Really giving the more obscure records I have a workout for once.

Well the whole mix has turned out to be one of my personal favourites of all time. I really hope people enjoy it.

[00:00]
1. Booka Shade - Ain't Got Much To Lose - Get Physical

Get Physical is my pick for label of the year, sick record after sick record. Booka Shade’s new album “Momento” is awesome. I love this track how it starts all weird and minimal and then blossoms into something fuzzy and warm.
[07:06]
2. Alex Smoke - Sortie – Vakant

I should have named this mix the Alex Smoke Show. This new force from Glasgow is rocking out proper. Dark and minimal glitchy magic on this one.
[10:58]
3. Pantytec - Elastobabe (Soul Capsule Remix) – Perlon

A few years old now, a deep and chuggy track with twisted vocals, well it’s Perlon what do you expect?
[14:51]
4. M.I.A. - Change - Sub Static

New one on Sub Static, all about that slow building vibe.
[19:00]
5. Black Strobe - Innerstrings (Volga Select Double Dub) – Output

Ivan Smagghe and his Black Strobe guise are in the big time these days, this was their first release from 1999. Smagghe changes jumpsuits to Volga Select for this Depeche Mode sounding remix.
[24:24]
6. Misc. - Momentum – Sender

Another incredible artist group tucked away in the Kompakt label family. These Germans have that similar sound to Alter Ego but maybe less raw and dare I say better.
[28:32]
7. Envoy - Move On (Alex Smoke Dub) – Soma

Alex Smoke transforms the euphoric original into a mad vocoded acid trip.
[34:28]
8. Wax - The Crocodile – RebelOne

Screaming rock mayhem from the delinquent offshoot label of Crosstown Rebels.
[36:38]
9. Destillat - Korn - Klang Elektronik

Grungy electro-tech with a show stealing meaty guitar riff.
[41:46]
10. DK7 - The Difference (Jori Hulkonen Remix) – Output

Dark and hard for Jori Hulkonen but that’s his wide-ranging ability. Why is it when Europeans insert spoken English vocal parts, there’s always something disturbingly wrong with them? This is no exception I admit, but the track still rocks despite!
[47:25]
11. Dirt Crew - Give Me House - Moodmusic Limited

This record reminds me of those dark 8am moments at Industry.
[49:34]
12. John Tejada - Sweat (On the Walls) - Poker Flat

Big track from Tejada that’s getting huge support from all the big players.
[53:53]
13. Booka Shade - Vertigo - Get Physical

Opening track from the Booka Shade album. This pretty much sums up the whole Get Physical sound. Wicked!
[58:42]
14. Olav Pozsgay - Nur Aus Liebe – Systematic

Key-change heaven.
[62:31]
15. Alex Smoke - Strange Attractor – Vakant

You can’t get much more dark and deranged than this.
[66:52]
16. Terranova - Naughty Grounds - Edition Terranova

You could compare Terranova to Swayzak, they’re music ranges from hip-hop to techno to the just plain strange.
[70:32]
17. Steve Barnes - Cosmic Sandwich (Extended Version) – Traumschallplatten

That record that sounds like the crystal meth induced ranting hallucinations of an alien. Or maybe Michael Jackson after a few weeks in solitary.
[77:57]
18. UBU - Ride the Snake (Blakkat Mix) – Shaboom

Mesmerizing acid magic from a few years back.
[82:25]
19. I-Robots - Spacer Woman (Oxtongue Version) – Elettrica

Big happy sexy electro anthem.
[88:35]
20. Alex Smoke - Pingu – Vakant

The third track in this mix from the Simple Things EP on Vakant. Very progressive but very not at the same time.
[93:26]
21. Francisco - Esplanade 97 (Instrumental) – Nature

I still can’t decide if I like the vocal mix of this, it’s really really bad in a good way. But until I get off the fence the instrumental works wonders.
[97:09]
22. Chemical Brothers - Morning Lemon – Astralwerks

Reaching way back to the b-side of “Block Rockin’ Beats” for this old-school ghetto blaster jam.
[100:28]
23. Evil 9 - We Have The Energy - Marine Parade

Angry protest breakbeat that raises a raucus with a healthy dose of snares and shouting. Another gem from Evil Nine’s “You Can Be Special Too” album.
[104:33]
24. X-Press 2 - I Want You Back – Skint

Forgotten beauty from the bomb factory that is X-Press 2. Tribally peace division sound on this one.
[110:29]
25. Cari Lekebusch - Love International – Truesoul

Cari Lekebusch’s “The Architect” album has 8 tracks and all of them could be staples in a set. Wide ranging sounds brought together with raunchy pitched down programming.
[115:28]
26. Cevin Fisher - Music Saved My Life (Pete Heller Remix) - Smile

After two hours of mostly dark and evil music everything is reborn with a melodic hands in the air, smile on the face finish.

Lo-Fi Glitchy Drug Beats - Matt Coleridge Solution Radio - 12-07-04

hmmm.
not standard coleridge fare at all.
nice tracks none the less.

i hope this music is starting to develop a broader audience.
i guess with holden and co. also throwing it down it's finally getting to see the proverbial light of day.

yep... this mix is pretty hot.

so much so that I'm quite certain the latter half will be best enjoyed in a greenish sort of haze.

Effort is well noticed

Nice mix, I really like the detailing you put into your tracklisting with the times between each track and your thoughts on each of them, all convenient for trainspotting and a nice range in sound too.

Headphone users you understand, yaaaaah
*naturally*

I though glitchy and dark would equal not big tunes.

damn and I thought this was minimal stuff.

Matt... this reminds me of what prog was when I got into it, only with an electro-tinge. listening to quivver and p&w gave me nightmares. I have this tech mix from howells that I still cant fall asleep to.

Wax - The Crocodile – RebelOne (fecking awesome track).

great mix, some great tunes in there.

Nesta, are you listening to it on your headphones or out on speakers?

I think this is a headphones type of mix. I mean, my computer soundsystem is not bad... but surely some tracks and its subtleties are picked up better on good headphones.

tossed this mix on after a night of partying, fit the mood great and made a nice backdrop to sketchy goodness.

I really like this mix. It was the soundtrack to my Sunday

Matt, if you continue to go in this direction I'll have to come to see you spin for sure.
